Local rescue services and lifeboat charities in North Cornwall are being urged to apply for a new wave of government funding by local MP Scott Mann.
The Department for Transport has announced that £1 million of grants is once again being made available through the ‘Inshore and inland rescue boat grant scheme’, which allows lifesaving charities and organisations to purchase new equipment, boats and safety gear.
Over the past three years, grants totalling £2.6 million have been awarded to organisations across the UK, including Cornwall. In 2016 the Bude Surf Life Saving Club was awarded £7,300 to purchase new equipment.
Announcing the new funding, Maritime Minister John Hayes said:
“We value and support the lifesaving work that goes on every day by our dedicated local waterway rescue services. Their commitment and skills keep our rivers, lakes and inshore areas safe.
“The additional funds provided by the scheme will ensure that these tireless volunteers and charities can get the boats, equipment and other resources they need to provide round-the-clock lifesaving services.”
Scott Mann said:
“I’m delighted that the Government is committing yet more money to this important scheme. Here in Cornwall we all know how dangerous the sea and coastline can be, and it’s vital that our lifeboat and lifesaving charities have the resources they need to protect people and save lives.
“The recent floods in Coverack have reminded us how quickly danger can strike and how important our coastal emergency services are. Therefore, I’m urging all lifeboat charities and lifesaving organisations in North Cornwall to apply for this new funding, and I welcome interested groups to contact my office where we can supply further details on how to apply.”
Charities have until 6 September to submit their bids to the Department for Transport. Details on how to apply for funding can be found here: https://www.gov.uk/government/news/lifeboat-charities-to-receive-1-million-grant-boost
