Devon and Cornwall’s Police & Crime Commissioner, Alison Hernandez, has welcomed the fight on crime in Bodmin after visiting the town on Tuesday, 2nd August to meet with North Cornwall’s MP Scott Mann and members of the local police force.
In her first visit to Scott Mann’s office in Bodmin, Alison spoke with Scott and his staff to hear what concerns and issues are being raised by constituents in North Cornwall.
Scott explained to Alison what he had been doing to support local communities like St Kew, St Teath, Werrington and Stratton who were trying to implement lower speed limits or road layout changes to clamp down on speeding or dangerous drivers, including the Private Members Bill that Scott tabled in Parliament last year to devolve speed limits to town and parish councils.
Both Alison and Scott then met with Inspector Rob Mooney and PCSO Debbie Knowlden to discuss crime in Bodmin and what’s being done to tackle it, including ways to curb youth anti-social behaviour.
During her visit, Alison walked through Fore Street to speak with business owners and members of the public, including Millets, Cornwall Hospice Care and Jai the Jeweller. They then walked over to Priory Park and the Narisa Hall to speak with young people about local policing and ideas for new facilities.
Commenting on her visit, PCC Alison Hernandez said:
“Bodmin is an excellent example of how working in partnership can quickly lead to improvements in the quality of life.
“When my team and I visited Bodmin a few weeks ago to engage with the public about my Police and Crime Plan, I was struck by the positive comments about the local policing team and I wanted to come back to find out what they were doing right.
“Scott and I did a street survey and met with Inspector Rob Mooney and PCSO Debbie Knowlden to discuss their efforts in making Bodmin a better place to live and work, as well as their plans for the future.
“Interestingly, we spoke to lots of young people who voiced views about what they would like to see improved as well.
“It was also great to see that the local PCSO knew everyone on her walk round the town.”
Scott Mann MP said:
“It is clear that the Bodmin Local Community Policing Team is doing such great work, and Debbie and Rob are committed to sorting out the challenges Bodmin faces.
“With our offices being in Bodmin, we have talked to the local traders over the last 14 months and the increased police presence and action has improved things significantly.
“I know that Alison enjoyed her visit to Bodmin and I’m glad we had such constructive talks with the local police team and local people about how we can move forward.”
