There are many candidates who have stepped forward as the new leader of the Conservative Party and Prime Minister, but I will not be campaigning or taking any public role in the leadership election. Over the summer recess, I will be working on a lot of constituency issues and getting around North Cornwall - meeting local people and businesses. This is where I want to focus my energy and time. In terms of my government role, the Whip's Office will remain neutral to ensure Parliamentary business continues to run smoothly. We have important legislation moving forward including the National Security Bill, and I’m sure that you’ll agree this is something which cannot take a back seat.
In terms of voting for a new leader, this is an important decision, so I will scrutinise the campaigns and talk to the candidates before making a choice.
We were re-elected in 2019 on a mandate to level up the regions. I want to be clear that my main 'ask' to potential leaders is that they continue this agenda and ensure places like North Cornwall receive our fair share of funding. We have already achieved success; per-pupil school funding being raised to the national level is a particularly welcome policy.
I also want to ensure that leadership candidates share my vision for better skills and training in rural constituencies - Callywith College being a great example of what we have already done. Digital infrastructure, enhanced NHS services and support for housing are also policy areas I will raise with candidates. Most importantly in the short to medium term, the next leader will need to address the cost of living. Fuel prices are driving inflation and the impact it is having on our farms is being felt. This then rolls over into higher food costs and bills.
I would like to thank all the local residents who helped campaign so hard for Wadebridge Leisure Centre to remain open. I'm very pleased that our current Cornwall Council has devolved something that Parish and Town councils actually want rather than pushing stuff on them they had no interest in. The previous Lib-Dem run council leadership have a lot to answer for; their badly drawn up and weak leisure contract is responsible for the last twelve months of uncertainty. I will be working to ensure this community asset is successful and look forward to meeting with the Community Interest Group as soon as possible.
