Today the Secretary of State for Housing has announced the allocations of £8.6 billion worth of investment from the government’s landmark Affordable Homes Programme.
This marks the largest investment in affordable housing in a decade and will deliver over 17,000 new affordable homes across the South West.
I appreciate that many North Cornwall constituents also have concerns about Social Housing and renting, not just ownership, and I can assure you that affordable homeownership is just one strand of a larger housing programme.
The planning Bill which will be brought back to the House of Commons later this year will give us a real chance to make fundamental changes to housing in Cornwall. I look forward to continuing to work with colleagues in Government, Cornwall Council and the housing sector on these issues.
Owning a home in your local area should not be the preserve of a small number of people, but a mainstream, realistic and affordable option for people across the country.
That is why we have today announced the allocation of £8.6 billion of funding for our Affordable Homes Programme, which is set to deliver around 119,000 homes – with almost half of those being affordable homes and many more being available for Social Rent, typically 50 to 60 per cent of the market price.
This funding is part of the largest single investment in affordable housing in a decade and will help to make the ambition of homeownership a realistic and affordable reality for families and young people as we build back better.
