I was saddened to hear the news about Western Greyhound this morning. Not only for those employees who now face an uncertain future, but also for those who rely on buses in our more rural communities to get out and about in their daily lives.
Over the last eighteen months, bus services to our more remote communities has been raised with me on the doorstep many times. With many elderly residents relying on this crucial link to the outside world it was frustrating to have uncertainty about services during December, and then again three or four weeks ago.
I have been in contact with staff at Cornwall Council to ascertain which services that they are responsible for will be affected. These are the subsidised services, and are different to those that Western Greyhound run on a commercial basis.
The Council is working to implement some temporary replacement services, such as schools and the subsidised routes, until a more long term solution can be found. For North Cornwall that means the following routes will be affected:
555 - Padstow - Wadebridge - Bodmin Parkway - evening services
556 - Padstow - St Eval - Newquay - evening services
584 - Camelford to Wadebridge, via Delabole, Port Isaac and Rock
595 - Wadebridge to Bude, via Tintagel & Camelford
I hope to keep you updated with any news as and when I receive it. In the meantime Cornwall Council will also post updates to their affected services on their website which can be found here:
