I enjoyed a fantastic meeting with the Norwegian Fishing Minister and his delegation as part of the APPG on Fisheries.
Throughout the Brexit process, I spent a lot of time looking at the fisheries and agricultural policies that Norway had with the EU. As a member of EFTA Norway control their fisheries and say who fishes where, when and what for.
Norway engages in a yearly discussion with the EU about access which is linked to a zero-tariff arrangement for selling fish into the Single Market. The Norwegians also control the environmental measures linked to their fishery and have ended the discard ban and involve their fisherman on yearly discussions around quota allocations.
The model is one that I believe the UK should adopt as it repatriates the territorial fishing waters.
